The Codex journeys on...

It's been a while since anyone has posted about the codex. Erin Gleason has it now. Maybe we will see a glimpse of it soon.

dispatch and directions

codexers ! we have a happy dispatch from the road letting us know our drawing has arrived in philadelphia ~ thanks, Lauren, for getting the codex safely to Betty !

betty’s comment on previous post :

little bird said... argh - i think i'm understanding jean's frustration with posting on the blog. i'll have to ask daniel how he did it, who btw wrote the most lovely words on the drawing commentary page. but anyway, just wanted to check in and say that I HAVE THE DRAWING. and jeez...it's gonna be a LONG WHILE before it completes its journey! SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 5:25 PM

I thought I would respond to betty + jean’s frustration with a little tutorial on how to activate your blogger author privileges. I have re-sent the invite to become an author of this blog to : B.Kim, J.Ro, C. Cerwinka, and D.Brown.  I DO NOT HAVE email addresses for the following people, so if you’re friends with them, please pass along a way for me to contact them : D. Friedman, A. Teixeira and J. Dickstein.

Here’s how to start :
1. You’ll get an e-mail from me that looks like this :

e-mail

Following the link, you’ll be prompted to enter the password for your Gmail account or to open a Gmail account if you don’t already have one. [ sorry about this ! ]

2. Once you sign in, you’ll see this screen where you can click NEW POST to start typing your message and adding your photos + scans :

create new post

3. Once you have accepted the invitation as described above, you can also just go to the blog and sign in on the top right hand corner, like this :

sign in

4.  This is what a NEW POST window looks like : click to change font size and color, line spacing or to add photos + hyperlinks via the toolbar above the text box. I suggest previewing your post before you click to publish ; )

new post

Ok, so let me know if you have any issues getting up and running !! Thanks to each of you for contributing ~ I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE how it’s progressing ! Post ! Post ! POST !!!

Hello co.d.ex-ers !

Our drawing has had a very interesting and circular journey thus far .... but with Jean's recent update, I think it's safe to say everything is back on track ! This is the first exchange and we're learning as we go, so THANK YOU to everyone for your patience. I think now's a good time to review some pointers to make sure the drawing keeps moving as quickly as possible. [ thanks, Amy, for 1 - 3 !!! ]

1. Make sure your home address receives packages
2. Put the next person's info in the return address area
3. Save your next Whole Foods bag for eco-friendly wrapping
4. E-MAIL me [ elissa (at) welcometoloop.com ] when you're sending it out so that I can get in touch with the next person on the list - that way, they'll be on the lookout for a large package !

I know everyone wants very badly to see the progress, so please try to post a snapshot or scan to the blog before you send it out ! You need to be an administrator of the blog in order to do this, so I'm going to re-send the invites via e-mail.

Can you believe it's already August ?! I hope everyone is happy, healthy enjoying this fine summer season.

The Very Long Gap

So...now that the drawing has traveled South TWICE, it should definitely be back in Philly by now. I was hoping to upload some pics with this post, but...

Thought I'd share some chain-mail tips instead:
1) Make sure your home address receives packages (ahem, VOGEL!)
2) Put the next person's info in the return address area (this way it won't come back to you but keep the chain going!)
3) Save your next Whole Foods bag for eco-friendly wrapping.

Happy drawing,
Amy

Course Correction

Good morning, codexers -

Our little drawing [ which isn't so little, actually... ] had difficulty being delivered in Philadelphia recently. The Recipient Who Shall Remain Nameless [ RWSRN ] is having lots of work done to their house, which made the drawing undeliverable; it lived at the main Post Office for a week or two, and when finally RWSRN went to claim it, our drawing had already been re-routed back to Amy in Atlanta.

So.... I think we should try something new. After you have worked on the drawing, please e-mail the next person on the list to let them know the drawing is headed their way. I think this heads-up will be help keep our drawing moving forward. Amy, on behalf of RWSRN, I apologize for the extra inconvenience to you !

Whewsh ! Our drawing must be tired after all that travelling .... but bravo for surviving the scary recesses of the Post Office ....

Drawing on its way back north...

...been living in Atlanta for a week now. I discovered it at the front door last Sunday...it had been pouring rain all weekend but luckily the drawing was just "a bit humid" when I brought it inside. I gave it a chance to dry and days passed before I discovered it again, but when I did, I felt compelled to draw something in mirror image to Dan's creation. However, I switched up the subject matter enough to leave the next person stumped--should be interesting to see what he/she draws next! Hint: the next person is a DOE alum living on the East Coast. I mailed the drawing this weekend, or I would snap a quick pic...was just reminded of the blog! What a great idea Elissa--thanks for kicking this off.

And on it goes

I admit I sat on it for about a week. Not sure what to include - and more importantly, I didn't know where my art supplies were. We moved recently and half my life is still in a box marked "DK (fill in description here)."

The moment came late at night while Betty was sleeping. I rummaged around and found the tools I needed and put the blank paper on our dining room table/temporary work shop.

Here's what I saw when I looked down.

I decided not to plan and not to think too much and just started drawing some lines. The rest just came out automatically.

Enjoy next lucky participant!

26 February 2009

Good morning ! Okay, so Monday came and went and I was inundated with to-do's... but I am mailing the drawing today and I have photos to prove it ! I don't want to expose the full address of the first co.d.exer, but I will say this person is in Philadelphia... SO watch your mailboxes, kids ! We're on our way !
Of note : we have 3 friend slots on our exchange list, so feel free to add a name on your rotation - or post it here and the person who has the drawing can add it.
Also : I went back and forth on what size to make our drawing sheets and erred on the size of a larger 14" x 17" panel. We don't have to fill all of these panels, but I thought some breathing room would help. Don't be intimidated by all the white space - we have lots of people involved and we'll work our way through the Blankness !

on your mark ...

The Codex Project Instructions and Rules of Play are ready and the drawing will be mailed on Monday morning ! Our two running polls seem to indicate that we should keep this blog public and that the list of names remains a mystery to participants... if you haven't weighed in, please do so now. While you can double click the above image to see the details, I'll post the info here as well :

Rules of Play :

this is a creative exercise :
experiment, embellish, sketch, collage, paint, react to other people’s ideas, start new directions, play… erase, draw over, into, alongside – but always be respectful of the person who drew before you. please feel free to add panels if you run out of room !

this is a communal exercise :
try to be timely. work on the drawing as soon as you receive it. with 21 people in the project, if we each take a week, that’s 5 months until we’re finished !

this is a shared endeavor :
please scan / photograph / photocopy or otherwise document the drawing before you send it so that we can keep a record of its transformation.

Instructions :

1 : check your mailbox…. see drawing …. smile !
2 : post a comment to the blog to let the group know it has arrived safely.
3 : do your thing !
4 : on the sheet provided, list your name, your location, the date + random or related thoughts
5 : scan / photograph / photocopy or otherwise document the drawing [ high resolution, please ]
6 : post images to the blog
7 : wrap drawing carefully between 2 sheets of cardboard in envelope, kraft paper, or box
8 : mail to the next person on the list

[ disclaimer : you are taking part in a project organized by elissa barbieri for loop, llc. this is a shared exercise and common law copyright protects all participants . the final drawing will not be exhibited, duplicated or reproduced for sale without express written credit given to each of its authors. ]
